Creat in 1989 la institutul de cercetare CERN, in Elvetia, web-ul se bazeaza pe protocol de transport prin hypertext(http), un standard Internet care specifica cum o aplicatie poate fi localiza si achzitiona resurse de pe un alt computer de pe Internet. Cele mai multe documente web sunt create folosind hypertext markup language(HTML), un sistem de codare a documentelor www usor de invatat. Acumuland hypermedia(imagini grafice, sunete, animatii, video), www a devenit cel mai bun mediu pentru publicarea informatiei pe Internet.
