COLIBRI — Innovative Worlds Gallery is the first gallery dedicated exclusively to worldbuilding and original virtual worlds, while also functioning as a creative studio focused on arts-based innovation.
Founded by immersive artist Ioana Mischie, marking more than a decade of pioneering work across audiovisual and immersive media, COLIBRI explores new forms of expression at the intersection of imaginative storytelling, technology, and social impact. It brings together transdisciplinary, transgenerational, and transperspectival experiences. Original storyworlds developed by the artist — including Tangible Utopias, DreamNA, or Human Violins — will form the gallery’s creative foundation, alongside new worldbuilding formats conceived specifically for the space and its evolving approach.
“We live in a culture that often leads us to believe innovation belongs primarily to science and technology. Yet some of the most transformative ideas emerge from poetic, daring, courageous storyworlds. If we trained ourselves to look more closely, we might discover seeds of societal redesign within almost every mature storyworld. I increasingly see arts-led innovation not as a peripheral process, but as an essential methodology for navigating the complexity of our time. My goal is to build a holistic ecosystem around it encompassing imaginary explorations as well as tangible outcomes.”, said Ioana Mischie.
Long associated with science fiction and speculative storytelling, worldbuilding was expanded by production designer Alex McDowell into a collaborative design-led methodology. COLIBRI pushes this premise further: it treats imagined worlds as societal prototypes — alternative models for future societies that can first be envisioned, tested, and experienced. Virtual worlds are a distinctly European field of cultural expression, with the potential to resonate far beyond specialist audiences and become meaningful cultural spaces for diverse generations, communities, and social groups.
“Thought-provoking, qualitative, original imaginary worlds might feel increasingly rare in a culture driven by quantity, speed, or inconsistency. I believe carefully crafted storyworlds deserve to be preserved and advanced — not simply as isolated artworks, but as an ever-expanding intangible heritage.”, Ioana Mischie.
The Opening Exhibit
COLIBRI was previewed during Noaptea Albă a Galeriilor — NAG, on the 2nd and 3rd of October 2026, with the exhibition Tangible Utopias: Playful Futures, a collection of six immersive worlds inspired by children’s imagination and brought to life by a transdisciplinary team of artists. Audiences were invited to explore the works through an artist-guided journey into the ideas, processes, and worldbuilding methods behind them.
“One of the most surprising moments was seeing high school students step into the space and instinctively experience it as a place where they belong.” added Ioana Mischie.
The works presented are rooted in the audiovisual genre of noetic fiction (noe-fi), an original concept defined by Ioana Mischie in her 2019 doctoral research. While science fiction often imagines futures shaped by technological evolution, noe-fi explores futures shaped by the evolution of human consciousness, proposing worlds in which inner transformation can become an engine for collective transformation.
Why COLIBRI
The hummingbird is one of the few birds capable of flying in virtually every direction — forward, backward, sideways, upward and downward — while also hovering perfectly in place. Similarly, the private gallery approaches each idea from multiple perspectives, expanding it across disciplines, media, technologies, and audiences. Conceived as a micro-playground, the gallery uses its intimate scale as a laboratory for encounters with expansive fictional worlds.
“After 15 years of creating stories from hallways, transitional spaces, and borrowed corners of the world, I found myself longing for a creative home. The last time I experienced that sense of possibility was during my Fulbright scholarship in Los Angeles, when I had my first small artist studio. COLIBRI brings that feeling back — only now, as a playground I can share with others. I love its paradox: how such a small space can hold an infinity of worlds, perspectives, and ways of imagining.”, Ioana Mischie.
The Adaptive Schedule
Located at 10 Ioan C. Filitti Street in Bucharest, COLIBRI will welcome the public through a curated programme of special events and pre-arranged visits. Intimate in scale but expansive in ambition, the gallery-atelier is conceived as a space where worlds, conversations, and experiments can unfold far beyond its physical walls.
The Architectural Design
The architectural concept of the space was developed in collaboration with Phenomena Laboratory, with an emphasis on intimacy and extensibility. Custom-made furniture designed by Vlad Dragila extend this language throughout the space, allowing the architecture itself to become part of the narrative experience.

Ioana Mischie is a notable Romanian innovative artist (writer/director) and futurist, multi-awarded for film, interactive VR and pioneering concepts. Fulbright Grantee Alumna of USC School of Cinematic Arts and Alumna of UNATC, advanced the transmedia storytelling field as part of her doctoral study thesis completed with Summa Cum Laude. Her cinematic projects have traveled to more than 250 festivals worldwide (Cannes IFF, Venice Biennale IFF) and received distinguished global awards (The Webby Awards, European XR Awards, Fipadoc Smart Award). Being considered a trendsetter in the AV field, her most recent cinematic worlds embrace a new audio-visual genre called noetic fiction (advocating for futures fueled by the advancement of human consciousness): Government of Children, Tangible Utopias, Human Violins, DreamNA. In the recent decade, she marked several milestones in the audio-visual industry after releasing Romania’s first stereoscopic feature, multi-player immersive franchise or the first film involving AI practices creatively. Contributed to notable books published by MIT Press and NYU Press and activated as a lecturer at UNATC and international speaker of multiple conferences worldwide, including TEDxBucharest Women Bold and Brilliant. Envisioning the world as a neo-creative playground, she deeply believes that storytellers are “the architects of the future” (Buckminster Fuller).
